What a weekend

So this weekend ended up being tons of fun! A ton of the roommates went to Africa Burn which is like the African version of California's Burning Man, so the big house was a big empty this weekend (which can be nice ).

Saturday we went to the Old Biscuit Mill, which really never gets old. We walked there, because even though it is fall, this weekend was hot and beautiful. We made a bee line for the food (of course) and I got the most delicious vegetarian wrap, that had too much stuff in it to mention...but the complex flavors were AMAZING. Though Stephen had a really really fresh and delish mozzarella, tomato, and pesto sammy on foccacia which also looked incredible. And I think the winner for the day was Amanda with the potato latka, poached egg with hollandaise sauce and lox. Now I don't even really like lox, and poached eggs have just recently started to grow on me, but it was INCREDIBLE, and that is what I will be eating next week for sure :) Enough foodie talk.

After the biscuit mill we went to see Stomp! I haven't seen stomp since about the 7th grade, so it was really fun to see it in Cape Town, afterwards we headed down to the waterfront for some excellent fish and chips and a glass of wine.

Today....whoa today. Today, I hiked table mountain. Yes...that big flat table top?

We hiked from the bottom to the top, and I can say first hand that it was one of the hardest hikes I've ever done. There's nothing like climbing a mountain to kick your ass into shape. It was literally rocky stairs...straight up....for about 2.5 hours, cardio much? Haha, it was HARD. Once we reached the top, we could not even do a victory dance because our legs were jello, but we managed to pretty much swallow whole a pb&j before taking in the view and then heading back down. We were hiking from about 10am-430pm, and it was intense...but an accomplishment! I think I might be paralyzed tomorrow tho...

Pics from the top!! And Erin, Jess and I at the top of the gorge. extreme, right?

public holiday on tuesday! No Class! This makes me extremely extremely happy :)

Stellenbosch

We tasted at Spier (the site of Jess's accident) and then two more before we made it to the backpackers. We had to split up four and four which kind of sucked, but not bad. We met up for dinner and then hit the town of Stellenbosch! Its interesting because its like a college town which I am not used to at UCT or USF...but cool. I was a little concerned about all the Afrikaners there, and any race issues...and regarding that there are lots of white kids, lots of Afrikaans being spoken, and my friends got a few racist comments and I didn't hear any...which was a good thing I think. Stellenbosch is an Afrikaans university where most of the people speak Afrikaans, classes are taught in Afrikaans and racism is part of their history, so its always kind of at the back of my mind when I head to that part of the world.

So this weekend in Stellenbosch was a lot of fun!! We rented two cars and Dan, Stephen, Callie, Taryn, Amanda, Nicole and Jess and I headed up to wine country to do some tasting.

I almost went to Stellenbosch instead of UCT...and I'm so glad I ended up where I ended up. But a weekend there was lovely, its a beautiful place.

About two months until we leave our large 17 person house and go back to our respective homes. For some reason it is on people's minds and has started to come up in conversation a lot. Thinking about not being in CT is weird...thinking of leaving all of the wonderful people I have met is weird...but I am starting to miss the creature comforts of home:

-mac and cheese (though wendy did bring me some)
-a coffee maker with large quantities of coffee in it
-TRADER JOES
-my spot on the couch at home
-a bed that is a little softer than a rock
-my entire extensive wardrobe
-internet that you dont pay for by megabite (and that doesn't go down every other day)
-a laundry machine that you dont share with 16 others
-farmer's markets on sundays on Grove street in SF
-walking 2 minutes to class

Life etc

So interwebz still dont work well down here in SA, but I got the pics to upload from the last post! So here they are. My favorite one is all of us next to our little beater car (rodge!) and the monkey land pic where the monkey is following us down the bridge...its hard to see but the black thing is a monkey and yes he was chasing us.

This week has been school school school but I think we are taking another little weekend away to Stellenbosch with all the peeps!

Life

its been a while blogosphere! I got told that my blog was too wordy...so now I'm going to give short updates, nothing extreme like I have been doing. Oh and that I use "haha" too much. Critics...who needs em?

So of course, the rest of my mom's trip was incredible...I loved spending time with her and showing her all of Cape Town, and we had a fun Township tour, and then I headed back to school stupidness.

After those couple days of hell Taryn, Callie, Amanda and I went on the Garden Route! It took us all day Friday to drive, but we finally made it to Plettenberg Bay, and the next day went to Knysna, Monkey land, and then BUNGEE JUMPING.

Bungee jumping needs an aside - most amazing experience ever. There is nothing that prepares you for jumping off of a 700ft tall bridge, but I did it! It was incredible, I screamed bloody murder but it was such a great feeling. Really the high can't be beat...pics below :)

The last day we went on a horseback safari and had a great breakfast in Mossel Bay, such a good girls weekend! I also stayed in hostels for the first time, though they are called "backpackers" here. They are pretty awesome actually, such a great way to stay somewhere cheaply and meet cool people.

Pictures must come later, because the internet in our house is making me want to scream.
